The American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS) publishes three scientific journals, HortScience, The Journal of the American Society for Horticultural Science and HortTechnology. Free access to these journals and papers has been limited to ASHS members. Authors have always been allowed to share a paper upon request. For non-members, paid access to individual papers was considered steep so most industry people asked one of us to access and share the paper. Well, I never thought I would be able to share this good news. As of January 1, 2019, HortTechnology became available as an online-only, open-access journal. As of January 1, 2020, the Journal of the American Society for Horticultural Science and HortScience also moved to open access journals.
After decades of growers and field reps asking me and others at WSU to source a paper from these journals we can now say get them yourself! On several important levels, the democratization of scientific information and results that industry members and taxpayers financially support is a win-win deal and a move in the right direction.
