8:45-9:00 – Registration

9:00-9:25 – Mating Disruption and Best Management Practices – Dani Gray

Codling moth mating disruption is the foundation for integrated pest management in apple and pears, but a successful and effective mating disruption program requires careful planning and execution.  We will discuss types of mating disruption dispensers (hand applied vs aerosol), proper timing and application, and common causes of failure.

9:25-10:00 – Drape Netting – Adrian Marshall, Teah Smith

Drape netting has become a well-known tool for protection from hail and sunburn damage, but it is also an effective tool for the exclusion of insect pests such as codling moth. Adrian Marshall, USDA-ARS Postdoctoral Research Associate, and Teah Smith, Zirkle Fruit Entomologist, talk about their research and experiences with drape netting.

10:00-10:25 – Trap Capture and Monitoring – Rob Curtiss

Rob Curtiss will share his research and decision matrix on combinations of monitoring trap lures and mating disruption programs over the last three years. Trap capture is one of the tools we rely on for monitoring moth populations in orchards. With multiple types of trap lures and mating disruption programs now being utilized across the state, it’s important to understand how these variations impact the trap area, number of traps needed, and trap capture estimates of in-field populations.

10:25-10:30 – Break

10:30-10:55 – Virus Resistance and Monitoring in WA – Tobin Northfield

Tobin Northfield will provide updates on virus resistance research being conducted in WA and what to do if you suspect virus resistance in your orchard. Tobin will also go over what to look for when assessing field efficacy after virus sprays.

10:55-11:20 – Research Updates: Emerging Tools – Rob Curtiss, William Walker

Rob Curtiss and William Walker will provide updates on tools their labs are currently working on that could add to the toolbox for codling moth management.

11:20 – 11:45 – Spray Nozzle Demonstration – Gwen Hoheisel

This will be a hands on demonstration of maintenance and options for nozzles and pressure gauges.  We will look at the effect of wear, pressure, and droplet size on coverage. Nozzle selection in relationship to AEZ will also be discussed.
